Privacy Policy
Last updated: June 2026
Downshift ("we", "us", "the app") is a mental health and wellness tool for truck drivers. We take your privacy seriously — especially because the data you share with this app is personal.
The Short Version
Your data is yours. Your employer cannot see it. We don't sell it. No one reads your journal but you.
What We Collect
We only collect data that you actively provide by using the app:
- Account information: email address and a password (stored as a secure hash — we never see your actual password)
- Profile information: alias/name, trusted contacts (names and phone numbers), preferences
- Mood check-ins: the mood you select and when you selected it
- Journal entries: text and voice note metadata that you write or record
- Health data: meal logs, water intake counts, shift hours, trip duration
- Usage analytics: which features you use (e.g., "completed breathing exercise") — no content, just event names
What We Do NOT Collect
- We do not track your GPS location continuously. Location is only accessed momentarily on the welcome screen for weather (if you grant permission), and is not stored.
- We do not record or store audio from voice journal entries on our servers. Audio is processed locally on your device.
- We do not share any data with your employer, trucking company, or fleet manager.
- We do not sell your data to anyone. Ever.
- We do not show ads.
How We Use Your Data
- To provide the app's features (mood tracking, insights, weekly review, etc.)
- To show you patterns in your own data (mood trends, meal-mood correlations)
- To improve the app based on aggregate, anonymized usage patterns (e.g., "40% of users complete the breathing exercise" — never "John completed it")
Data Storage & Security
- Your data is stored on secure cloud servers (AWS) in the United States
- All data in transit is encrypted via HTTPS/TLS
- Passwords are hashed using bcrypt — we cannot see or recover your password
- Database access is restricted to the application only
Data Sharing
We do not share your individual data with anyone. The only exception:
- If you use the "Export & Share" feature, you choose what to share and with whom. We don't control that.
- If required by law (e.g., a valid court order), we would comply with the minimum necessary disclosure and notify you if legally permitted.
Fleet & Enterprise Accounts
If your employer provides Downshift through a fleet program:
- Your employer cannot see your individual moods, journal entries, or any personal data
- They may see anonymized, aggregate data (e.g., "average fleet wellness score") with no way to identify individual drivers
- You can always use the app independently, even if your fleet cancels their subscription
Your Rights
- Access: You can view all your data in the app at any time (Weekly Review, mood history, journal)
- Export: You can export your data as a text summary using the Export feature
- Deletion: You can delete your entire account and all associated data from the Profile screen. This is permanent and irreversible.
- Correction: You can edit your profile information at any time
Children
Downshift is not intended for users under 13 years of age. We do not knowingly collect data from children.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy as the app evolves. If we make significant changes, we'll notify you in the app. The "last updated" date at the top will always reflect the most recent version.
